The Braided Rug Company, founded in 2002, is a mail order company specalising in American braided rugs. We are the only outlet for these rugs in Australia, but mail order combined with our personal service allows you to purchase with ease and make important decorating decisions regardless of where you live - so much so we have quite a few repeat customers!
What are American braided rugs?
American braided rugs were originally made from old coats and blankets which were cut into strips, plaited and then coiled and sewn together into mostly oval shaped rugs. The craft started in New England in the early 1700's and spread across the US as settlers moved west.
Today's 'commercial' braided rugs are still made in the US, they draw on 18th and 19th century designs, and they're assembled by hand so each rug is individual and unique. Our rugs by Capel (North Carolina) are vastly superior to most USA made braids. They contain 80%-90% surface yarns, whereas most other manufacturers' contain just 20% wrapped around 80% filler.
The Braided Rug Company has been Capel's agent in Australia for 16 years, so we are highly experienced in our recommendations. Designs on our website are the most sought after but there are many more designs & colours to choose from.
Braided rugs are hard-wearing, reversible and easy-care. They have a firm construction, are reasonably heavy and once settled they lie flat ie. they're not unstructured like rag rugs or dhurries which tend to ruck and wrinkle.
American braided rugs have great character and charm, and blend beautifully into country style homes. Wool blend braids in fabulous colours sit well with Persian rugs and kelims. Cotton blend braids are soft under foot in the bedroom or nursery, so perfect as a baby rug or play rug for your children.
A washable kitchen range is also ideal for any cooking or dining area, bathroom or laundry. Who likes standing on a cold tile floor! They can be fully washed in the event of a food or pet accident.
Small size washable rugs can be machine washed, and hung up or laid flat to dry. Larger sizes are best hosed in hot weather so they can dry out more easily. And being resistant to stains, mould and mildew - they can even be used on a deck or patio provided they're on a clean smooth surface, protected from the weather and allowed to dry out if they get wet.
Washable rugs are infinitely more practical than sisal or coir in a hallway or family room; plus they don't break down and shed fibres as do sisal or coir!
Braided rugs are assembled by hand - which means slight variations in size (2% tolerance). Dyeing is done in small lots so colours may differ from rug to rug - particuarly those made from variegated yarn. This hand-made look is all part of the charm of braided rugs, and with a little care, they will serve you well for many years.
